INTERNATIONAL YOUTH AWARD

THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH AWARD SCHEME.

Ndubaluba and Chengelo school is an accredited IYA Centre. Read on below to find out more.
"The Award concept is one of Individual Challenge. It presents to young people a balanced, non-competitive programme of voluntary activities which encourages personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility to themselves and service to their community."
IYA HANDBOOK 2000.

We are running the IYA for Chengelo School and helping other schools in running the Award. Below is some information on how the Centre runs the Award;

Bronze Level

The qualifying expedition is set in hilly bush around Kundalila Falls.Its a great introduction to what the expeditions are all about and a taster for whats in store at Silver and Gold level.

Silver Level

The notorious Qualifying expedition is in the Serenje area and ends up at Chipota Falls. The first two days are extremely demanding. On a couple of occasions students have had to put their training into practice and survive in the bush on their own. The scenery is wild and challenging and the 48km seems a lot  longer and actually is for many groups!

Gold Level

Zambia is still an explorers paradise and it was for this reason that Chengelo School's Gold IYA participants opted for exploration as part of their award. William Blake once wrote," Great things are done when men and mountains meet; this is not done by jostling in the street."

The students found undiscovered cave paintings in the Mulungushi Dam area of Zambia. These have since been reported to the National Heritage Conservation Commission. They also found a perfect spot for a potential outdoor centre or tourist facility on the shores of Lake Tanganyika near the magnificent Kalambo Falls. Recently there was a canoe expedition exploring the culture and landscape of the shoreline. The spirit of exploration lives on in Zambia, long may it continue to do so!

Service Residential Projects

Students live at a project site for 2 weeks and participate in all the activities. Students have been involved with; street kids projects, orphanages, schools for the physically disabled, medical clinics and rural self help schemes all over Zambia. For many it was the most meaningful, eye opening and rewarding aspect of the award.
